General Motor is.......Creating a New V8?!?
The Flint, Michigan plant will handle the machining of the blocks, cranks, and heads as well as assembling the completed unit while the Bay City plant will handle the camshafts and connecting rods while the smaller plants will handle smaller parts. Along with the Hemi and the Ford Godzilla engine, the small block is the only surviving overhead-valve V8 sold in new cars today. Currently you can find small blocks in GM's lineup of trucks and SUVs as well as the Camaro, Corvette, and CT5-V Blackwing.
During this press release, GM only made references to full size trucks and SUVs, alluding to the fact that this may not be used in cars at all. We already are aware that this very well may be the last generation of Camaros (and as we're all aware the CT5-V Blackwing was a once and done deal), though it does leave us wondering about the Corvette, though I'd imagine they'd at least keep a small block around for it. The Gen 6 Small block isn't expected for a few more years, though it leaves me wondering if it will be the last of its kind.
